you see | my heart is a bookshelf

poetry, flowers and tea

You see is a poem about how I always find myself daydreaming about different stages of my life and how I can never seem to let people go. The easiest way for me to describe this is through the metaphor of my heart being like a bookshelf. I keep adding more people into my life when I can't let go of the people from my past. Similarly to the way you would hold on to a torn old book that wasn't any good.

You see

my heart is like a bookshelf

you see
hundreds of inky hands are printed on my heart
this delicate heart
ink is starting to run through these veins

you see
i write each person I’ve met into this story
some have starring roles
others have just a simple sentence
very few leave the plot and return
there are reminders for those that simply faded
like dandelions in the breeze

i revisit each chapter at 3am
while I’m wide awake
but others are fast asleep
you see
i like it when the world is quite and lonely

if you look carefully
there’s a black book pushed to the back
out of sight
out of mind
sitting collecting dust
with the title “All I Need of Hell”
written in the finest silver

this book I’m scared to open
it hurts too much

you see
 its filled with the unforgivable
few know this tragic story
i’d like to keep it that way
but I guess I only have those two to thank
for how strong I have become today

Other poems you might like; oxygen | some words for you

I have been finding my passion for poetry again after having a long break of not writing. It feels liberating to express myself in this form again. I would love to know your thoughts on my poem you see in the comments below or you can send me a message on twitter

  1. You write beautifully. As cliche as this will sound, that poem spoke to me. It's immensely brave to share one's work (I say that as someone who attempts to write themselves) and I find it inspiring that you are - I know that I couldn't. Please keep writing and sharing your craft as you are damn well talented!!

    1. I know you probably won't see this as you commented anonymously but on the off chance that you do, I want to say thank you. It means more than I could ever explain that you say I am talented. It took a lot of courage to put out this poem to the world because the subject matter cuts deep. I never thought I would write something that would speak to others or have someone say they relate to the way I feel. I hope one day you feel able to share your writing because I'm sure it is 100x better than you think. Again, thank you for your kind words.

    2. Thank you for your lovely response :) I might bring myself to share my own work one day, we'll see. However, know that I only said you are talented because I genuinely think you are. I find your bravery in putting something as personal as this out there very inspiring. I do hope you keep sharing and I also hope you're having a good day ❤️
